Twice a year, instead of going to church, church comes to us.
This is not an abbreviated worship service; instead, it takes the bulk of both Saturday and Sunday.
Clinton borrowed a projector so that we could experience 8 hours of in-home religion on something slightly larger than the 15-inch laptop screen. Instead we've got an 80-inch screen - and no sports, action, explosions, grand sweeping panoramic shots, or high-speed car chases... no, those are fine on a 15-inch screen.
On the East Coast, we began Saturday at noon and went for two hours, then started again at 4:00 for two more hours. These meetings are available through online high-def streaming. Or cable, if you've got the right channel. We went for internet, clearly.
Clinton then ironed a shirt, went to a buddy's house, and together they went to church to catch the 2-hour Priesthood meeting via Satellite. They followed this up at 10:00 pm with dinner and guy talk... Clinton got home shortly after 1:00 am.
Today will feature the noon and 4:00 sessions.
With conference we enjoy certain traditions. The afore-mentioned pack of guys staying out after to get ice cream, dinner, or whatever. Women often use that Saturday Priesthood meeting time for shopping or dining in packs, though less frequently on the East Coast where it coincides with bed time.
There's also food. Mormons eat. Spiritual feasting often goes along with specific meals. The March Relief Society activity involves birthday cake - around the world. Our Stake's priesthood meetings consistently have refreshments of cookies from a specific bakery in Columbia. Funeral potatoes are named that way for a specific and traditional reason, though they are consumed on more occasions than just death.
In my family, either Saturday or Sunday for conference breakfast, we eat my family's version of Swedish Pancakes. Clinton likes them pretty well, and this tradition continues. It is definitely not health food. If you are a friend that is participating in the Bloggest Loser, stop now.
Beat 3 eggs til thick and lemon colored
Add 1 1/4 cup milk and beat.
Sift together and add 3/4 cup flour, 1 Tbsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp salt.
Mix well.
Mama always used an array of 4 frying pans across the wide stove top; I'm not as quick as her and my pans and stove allow 3 at a time; but I couldn't handle another, anyway. Moderately hot buttered frying pans... and you keep them buttered as you go. 1/4 cup measuring cup about 1/2 full is pretty good, and then flip to cook the other side.
To dress your crepe-like breakfast, in my family anyway, drizzle a teaspoon or two of melted butter and then sprinkle powdered sugar. Add another pancake, drizzle butter and powdered sugar, repeat. A stack of 4, 6, or 8 lined with sugar and butter. Hot and sweet and buttery.
And speaking of the soul, food, and funeral potatoes, I haven't decided what's for dinner, but doesn't that sound good?
If you participate in LDS General Conference, how do you observe?

Well for me it was a drill weekend so I will be catching up by watching it (re-runs) which, let's be honest, doesn't happen for all 8 hours but the ensign is a good way to read the talks. Not the same but It's what I can do when I am doing my military duties. As for the priesthood session, we three boys always get together.
Food, for sure. Steve makes similiar crepe-like pancakes that we love.
Conference is usually punctuated by doing grape juice at my house...but this year it got combined with Hawaii! Love all the food references...and thanks for the recipe.
