Roseola

Roseola is an acute disease of infants and young children in which a high fever and skin rash occur.

The disease is common in children ages 3 months to 4 years... It is caused by a virus called human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), although similar syndromes are possible with other viruses.

The child may have a runny nose, sore throat, and eye redness.

A fever usually occurs before the rash appears. It lasts for 3 (sometimes up to 7) days. The fever may be as high as 105° Fahrenheit, and it generally responds well to acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Between the second and fourth day of the illness, the fever drops and a rash appears (often as the fever falls).

The rash starts on the trunk and spreads to the limbs, neck, and face. The rash is pink or rose-colored, and has fairly small sores that are slightly raised.
The rash lasts from a few hours to 2 - 3 days. It usually does not itch.

Other symptoms include:
Irritability
High fever that comes on quickly
Yeah, spots caused a certain degree of alarm and we rushed off to the pediatrician with the indignant mental soliloquy like this: "Her vaccines are current. She can't have chicken pox. I'm not doing measles in the 9th month of pregnancy. Is it a reaction to amoxicillin? I haven't changed laundry detergents..."

The pediatrician walked into the room and said, "has she had a high temperature the last 3-4 days? 102 or maybe 103? You've been giving her Tylenol and that helps? Been tired and grumpy? She's actually on the mend now, doing just fine, only she looks bad and probably will for a couple more days."

That made me feel better.

So sorry! What a horrible virus!

Emma had Roseola (I think they all had it at one point in time, can't remember) but we were at a birthday party when her fever spiked the most. Then she pooped. And it leaked all down my t-shirt.

Yes, thanks to Roseola, Emma is a literal party pooper.

Hope your poor Emma is feeling much better very soon!

Ooo, she looks unhappy! I'm sorry!

We love roseola around our house. It causes the worrier in the house (cough*Kevin) to freak and me to get to say "I told you so" when it is diagnosed.

I like roseola better than hoof and mouth disease. That one just sounds wrong to tell people. We've had it too. Sigh.

Good luck to baby and momma!

Not fun. My girls have all had it at least once. My mom said I had it about six times as a baby. Again, not fun...especially when pregnant. Good luck.
