Gratitude and Shoes

A few days ago I was talking to a friend, an immigrant, about shoes. I wear the same pair of flip flops for two summers straight, branching out to my trainers at the gym and church shoes for Sunday. My friend loves shoes, and told me that when she was growing up there wasn't money for shoes, sometimes they would borrow shoes from cousins, and she dreamed about shoes like I dreamed about having a pony and living in a castle.
I sure have a lot to be grateful for. I have been very blessed and lived very well all my life. I have a good education, a job, a home, a 17-year old running car, food in the cupboards, plane tickets for a vacation, and lots of clothes to wear. I'm able to make an offer on a nice house. I am married to my best friend and have 2 beautiful healthy daughters.
Furthermore, I have 3 pairs of trainers, 5 pairs of flip flops, 5 pairs of Sunday shoes, several boots, winter shoes, spring and fall shoes, and a closet full of other shoes that just sit there waiting for some occasion to come out.
I really have no right to ever use the word "need."
