Thursday morning we drove a couple miles to the Smith Family Farm. We saw the [rebuilt] log home where Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith lived with their 9 children.

It was here that their son, Joseph, went out to the woods and prayed. In those woods, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith.

Consequent to this, a few years passed and Joseph Smith was given instructions to translate ancient scriptures engraved on gold plates, known now as the Book of Mormon.
Some people in the neighborhood were antagonistic to Joseph Smith, and on several occasions he had to get sneaky in the ways he protected the plates from would-be thieves. Lizzy is standing by the brick hearth that Joseph took up, stashed the plates, and then replaced the bricks.

And here are a few more favorite pictures from the Smith Farm and Grove:

Now, the point of our vacation was to get away, to see Aunt Pat, and to spend some time together as a family. Aunt Pat lives in Palmyra, New York; so a little Church History was a natural and positive side effect.
